Glenorchy City Council is seeking funding to deliver a new destination playspace at the Berriedale Foreshore.
Transforming one of the municipality’s most significant waterfront locations into a high-quality, inclusive, and regionally significant recreation asset for children, families, and visitors from across Greater Hobart.
Why Berriedale?
Council’s Playspace Strategy 2021–2040 identifies a critical need for a third destination playspace in the northern part of the municipality. Glenorchy currently has two destination playspaces — Benjafield Park in Moonah and Giblin’s Reserve in Goodwood — but the northern area is underserved, despite having a higher proportion of children than the Greater Hobart average, lower household incomes and greater reliance on free public recreation, ageing play infrastructure that no longer meets contemporary standards, and a growing population and increasing visitation to the Berriedale precinct.
The Berriedale Foreshore is identified as the priority location due to its scenic waterfront setting, proximity to MONA and the Intercity Cycleway, and existing carparking and recently constructed toilet amenities.
What Will It Include?
The playspace will be designed in accordance with Council’s Playspace Strategy and Australian Standards (AS 4685), with a strong emphasis on universal design, nature-based play, and long-term durability. Features will include a diverse range of all-abilities play equipment, nature-based and imaginative play zones, accessible paths and inclusive design features, shaded family and social gathering areas, seating, shelters, and drinking water, landscaping and environmental enhancements, integration with the foreshore trail network, and new playground safety fencing.
Locally sourced materials and Australian-made equipment will be prioritised wherever possible.
Why It Matters
This project delivers far more than a playground. It directly addresses social inequity by providing a free, high-quality public asset in a community with a higher proportion of young families and lower household incomes. Universal design ensures children of all abilities can participate fully.
Located adjacent to MONA and the Intercity Cycleway, the playspace will also strengthen Berriedale Foreshore as a regional destination — increasing visitation, supporting local businesses, and contributing to Glenorchy’s growing tourism offering.
The project delivers on the objectives of Council’s Playspace Strategy, Open Space Strategy, and broader vision for a healthy, active, and connected community.
