Glenorchy City Council operates within a legislative framework set by the Tasmanian Government.
We also have our own by-laws that apply locally within the Glenorchy municipality.
State legislation
Council’s functions are governed primarily by:
- Local Government Act 1993 (Tasmania)
- Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993
- Building Act 2016
- Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994
- Public Health Act 1997
We also operate under many other Tasmanian and Commonwealth laws.
Council by-laws
By-laws are rules made by Council that apply within the Glenorchy municipality. They cover topics such as:
- Animals (including dogs and cats)
- Parking
- Outdoor dining
- Use of public land
By-laws must be approved by Council and the Minister, and are published in the Tasmanian Government Gazette.
