Glenorchy City Council operates within a legislative framework set by the Tasmanian Government.

We also have our own by-laws that apply locally within the Glenorchy municipality.

State legislation

Council’s functions are governed primarily by:

  • Local Government Act 1993 (Tasmania)
  • Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993
  • Building Act 2016
  • Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994
  • Public Health Act 1997

We also operate under many other Tasmanian and Commonwealth laws.

Council by-laws

By-laws are rules made by Council that apply within the Glenorchy municipality. They cover topics such as:

  • Animals (including dogs and cats)
  • Parking
  • Outdoor dining
  • Use of public land

By-laws must be approved by Council and the Minister, and are published in the Tasmanian Government Gazette.
