Glenorchy City Council is seeking investment to establish a coordinated Street Art Program

Commissioning high-quality murals, supporting local artists, and activating key public spaces across the municipality.

Why It Matters

Glenorchy has a strong creative identity — home to MONA, the Moonah Arts Centre, and a growing arts community. Yet many public spaces remain visually under-activated and don’t yet reflect the city’s character and diversity.

A coordinated street art program builds on this cultural foundation by transforming blank walls and underused spaces into welcoming, engaging environments that tell Glenorchy’s story. Community engagement has consistently shown that residents want more colour, creativity, and cultural expression in their streetscapes.

What the Program Delivers

Funding will support a multi-site program covering artist engagement, site preparation, mural installation, community workshops, and long-term maintenance. The program will create paid opportunities for Tasmanian artists, emerging creatives, and young people — strengthening the local creative economy and building pathways for skills development.

Key outcomes include transformation of key public spaces and precincts, a public art trail that complements major attractions like MONA and the Intercity Cycleway, reduced graffiti vandalism and lower maintenance costs for Council and property owners, youth engagement through co-design workshops and participation opportunities, and stronger community identity and pride of place.

Positioning Glenorchy as a Creative Destination

A network of high-quality murals will make Glenorchy’s streetscapes more distinctive and memorable — attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing the city’s reputation as a creative hub within Greater Hobart.
