If you want to install a wood heater in your home, you may need approval from Council.
Do you need approval?
Wood heater installation may require a building permit and compliance with the plumbing code depending on the type of heater and installation.
Contact Council before installing to confirm what approvals you need.
Environmental rules
Wood heaters must comply with Australian standards for emissions. Only install a heater that meets current Australian standards.
In Glenorchy, the use of wood heaters is subject to air quality rules. During high pollution periods, you may be asked to reduce or stop using your wood heater.
Operating your heater
To minimise smoke:
- Only burn dry, well-seasoned wood
- Do not burn treated timber, rubbish, wet wood or green wood
- Keep your heater properly maintained
- Ensure your flue is clean and functioning
