Glenorchy City Council is seeking funding to complete the detailed design and technical planning for the Humphreys Rivulet Path.

A critical step toward delivering a $17.5 million active transport corridor connecting Tolosa Park, Wellington Park, and key destinations across the city.

Total project cost: $17.5 million | Funding committed: $1.78 million (Australian Government grant) | Funding sought: $250,000 (design phase) | Project timeline: 12 months

Why This Project Matters

Humphreys Rivulet flows from the foothills of kunanyi/Mount Wellington through residential neighbourhoods to the Derwent River — one of Glenorchy’s most significant natural corridors. It has long been identified by Cycling South, Bicycle Tasmania, and Council as an ideal route for a safe, continuous shared walking and cycling path.

Glenorchy already has strong cycling assets — including the Mountain Bike Park, Tolosa Criterium Circuit, and Children’s Bike Track — but connectivity between these facilities is currently fragmented. A shared-use path along the rivulet corridor would provide a direct, low-gradient, family-friendly link that brings these destinations together and encourages active transport uptake across the city.

Why Detailed Design Comes First

The $250,000 funding sought is specifically for the detailed design phase, without which the project cannot proceed to construction. This phase will confirm the optimal path alignment, address flood management considerations, integrate environmental protection and habitat values, confirm construction feasibility, and produce accurate cost estimates to support future funding bids.

Investing in design now means the project can be delivered efficiently, in stages, and with confidence — positioning Glenorchy for major construction funding with shovel-ready documentation.

Project Impact

Once delivered, the Humphreys Rivulet Path will provide a safe, accessible active transport corridor for walkers and cyclists of all ages and abilities, improve community access to recreation, nature, and key urban destinations, enhance the environmental quality of a valued natural waterway, and support Glenorchy’s broader sustainable transport and wellbeing goals.
