Information about your responsibilities for trees on your property and the nature strip in front of your home.
Nature strips
The nature strip is the area of land between the footpath and the road. Council is responsible for maintaining nature strips, but in some areas residents help to keep them tidy.
You must not:
- Plant trees or shrubs on the nature strip without Council approval
- Place objects that block pedestrian access
- Damage any Council infrastructure (such as stormwater drains or signs)
Trees on private property
You are responsible for trees on your private property. This includes keeping them trimmed so they do not overhang footpaths or cause a hazard.
If a tree on your property is dangerous, you may need a permit to remove it. Contact our Planning team for advice.
Trees on Council land
If you are concerned about a tree on Council land (such as a park or road reserve), contact us and we will arrange an inspection.

Significant trees
Some trees in Glenorchy are protected under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme as significant trees. You must not remove or significantly prune a significant tree without a planning permit.
Contact our Planning team to find out if a tree is protected.
