Elected Aldermen are required to follow a Code of Conduct.
The Code sets out the standards of behaviour expected of elected members in carrying out their public duties.
What the Code covers
The Code of Conduct includes obligations around:
- Acting in the best interests of the community
- Declaring and managing conflicts of interest
- Treating others with respect
- Using Council resources appropriately
- Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
- Acting honestly and with integrity
Why it matters
The Code of Conduct helps to build community trust in the democratic process. High standards of behaviour by elected members support good governance and effective decision-making.
Breaches of the Code
If you believe an Alderman has breached the Code of Conduct, you can make a complaint. Complaints are handled in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993 (Tasmania).
