Can I attend a Council meeting?
Yes. All ordinary Council meetings are open to the public. You do not need to register or be invited.

Can I watch online?
Yes. Meetings are livestreamed on our website and YouTube channel. Recordings are available after the meeting.
How do I ask a question at a meeting?
Submit your question in writing to council@gcc.tas.gov.au before the meeting deadline. Include your name, address, and the question. Questions are read aloud at the meeting.
Are Council decisions final?
Council decisions are made by majority vote of the elected Aldermen. Some decisions can be appealed to the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal (RMPAT).
How do I find out what will be discussed?
Agendas are published on the website before each meeting. You can also subscribe to receive notifications when new documents are published.
What happens at a meeting?
The Mayor opens the meeting. Aldermen work through the agenda, discussing each item and voting on motions. The public may observe but not participate unless they have submitted a question or petition.
Who chairs the meeting?
The Mayor chairs Council meetings. The Deputy Mayor chairs if the Mayor is absent.
How long do meetings last?
Meetings vary in length depending on the agenda. Most ordinary meetings run for two to four hours.
Can I speak at a meeting?
Members of the public cannot speak during a meeting unless specifically invited to present as part of a formal process (such as a deputation). You can ask questions through the public question process.
