Plumbing work in Tasmania is divided into four categories based on risk level, each with different approval requirements.
As a shorthand guide, refer to the below:
| Category | Description | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Low risk | Owner can do the work — no approval needed |
| 2A | Low risk | Licensed plumber required — no approval needed |
| 2B | Low risk | Licensed plumber required — notify Council on completion |
| 3 | Medium risk | Cannot start until Council receives a Notice of Work and design plan, and issues a Certificate of Likely Compliance (CLC). Staged inspections required — work cannot proceed past each stage without approval |
| 4 | High risk | Cannot start until a Plumbing Permit and CLC are both issued. Staged inspections by a Council Surveyor required — work cannot proceed past each stage without approval |
